Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
From the preliminary task I learnt many things about producing a film opening. It helped me in many ways, for example I got a good idea of the different shots that I could use for my film opening. On my preliminary task I used three important shots, the 180 degree shot, match on action and the shot reverse shot. All of these shots were good shots and became easier to do once you progressed. I used these shots in my film opening too.

I used these shots in my film opening too.
Here are two screen shots of my "match on action" shot from my preliminary task. I learnt that this shot is very useful to show a character moving from one place to another and showing it in two shots and two different angles. As you can see, the first shot shows the character walking towards the door, then the next shot follows it up by showing him going through the door he just opened. This shot was very useful and helped me in my film opening. I use it to show my main character entering in and out of his room and his house, it is very affective.
Above is a screen shot of the"180 degree" shot from my preliminary task. I have learnt that this shot is very useful to show two character having a conversation and what kind of conversation they are having. For example, from this screen shot you can see that two boys are having a casual conversation across a table. I also learnt that I had to be very steady and still while recording this shot.
Above is another shot from my preliminary task, it is the "shot reverse shot". I learnt many things about this shot and it helped me a lot for my film opening. This shot could be used in various ways, as you can see from the screen shot, it can be used to show one person who is talking to the other person who is the one listening, this helps show the expressions of the character speaking. Other ways it could be used is, if someone is looking at someone from afar, or if they walking and the camera is over the characters shoulder to show the path he/she is walking in. I used this shot in my film opening, which shows the killer X, staring at the main character Tony.

Evaluation Question 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract/address my audience for my film opening i did a variety of things such as showing some people my research and planning to understand what a rough outline of the story is and what genre it is. I also showed them my mind map so they know what kind of things were included in the opening such as props, costumes etc. Then I showed them my film opening and asked them what they like about it and if it fit in with the genre I was getting across. I asked them a few questions about my film opening.
1. What did u like most about the film opening? The thing i liked most was the music used during the opening. It brought a scary atmosphere which also would make you think something will happen which is what i expect from a horror film.
2. Did my film fit the genre? I think the opening did fit the horror genre because you followed the conventions of that genre such as scary music to build tension, cut scenes to show other characters that are in the film and what they are doing. You also used good costumes such as masks and a hoodie which tells you who is the killer in the film and using props such as knives which also is a typical prop used in horror film which also represents the film which is a slasher horror film.
3. Would you recommend it and why? I would recommend this film because it made me jump a lot. It used good music which kept me on my seat through the duration of it. It will give the audience a sense of fright and unexpected scenes.

Evaluation Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
This is Catello Di-iulio, he is 16 years old and lives in Bedford.
He dresses very casually - smart shirts, t-shirts and jeans, with trainers. He also like to wear simple hoodies. He enjoys socialising with people, hanging out with friends, going to the cinema and likes to go shopping. He enjoys shopping at shops like River Island, Next, Topman and H&M. The films he enjoys watching are horror, action and comedy films like paranormal activity, the strangers, the expendables and 21 jump street, the inbetweeners movie, which are all pretty boyish films and he likes to watch them with his friends.
Catello also likes to watch a lot of different television programmes, mostly soaps like Hollyoaks, EastEnders and Waterloo Road. Reality shows are also his favourites, for example he likes to watch Russel Howard's Good News, The Only Way is Essex, Made in Chelsea and Geordie Shore. The main channels are E4, itv 2, BBC 1, BBC Three and MTV.
The music this person would listen to would be the latest songs in the charts, the genre's he listens to would vary from Pop, hip hop, rock, indie and R&B. His favourite music band is The Script and he also like Jason Mraz.
Overall, I think our film would appeal to him because he's a stereotypical teenage boy, who likes to hang out with friends, and enjoys mostly boyish things. He would stay on track with all the latest films in his local cinema therefore, if my film was showing in his local cinema, he would go and watch it because my film has all the conventions which would appeal to him.
Evaluation Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Why have you chosen your production company logo?
We have chosen our production company logo, because it shows the audience who produced the film, who was behind the making of everything in the film, also it shows what kind of films we would make. Our company is called "Slasher Productions", and our main genre is horror, so the name is really catchy and easy on the eye, as the word "slasher" is a convention of a horror film. Also the genre has many films under the slasher category, as it is a very popular category amongst the genre.
What is a production company? What do they do?
A production company creates motion pictures, TV programmes, adverts, trailers and other media products. The production companies show the audience what kind of films they make or produce, for example the pictures below we can see some famous production companies, and judging from the style and fonts of their company logo, you can tell that their main genre is horror. This will tell the audience which production company made the film, and what their genre is.
Which film distributor would you choose for your film and why? What other films have they distributed that are similar to yours?
The film distributor I would choose for my film is Paramount, because they are a very famous and popular film distribution company, and have released many films which have been successful amongst the film industry. This could help my film attract the audience, as a big film distributing company like Paramount is behind the release of the film. They have distributed films like Friday 13th and Paranormal Activity 1,2 and 3.
Titles in a film are very important, because it shows all the different roles of the people who have created the film. The audience should know who did what, for example it is important to show the "directed by" title, as the person who directed the film was the main person who came up with the ideas for the film. Also another important title could be the "edited by", this is because it shows the audience who edited the film, as this person puts everything together and edits the special effects, transition and cuts. Last but not least, the production company name should be there too, as this shows their importance and authority it has over the film. For my film opening, I have shown all their important titles, which show what me and my partner have done in the making of the film. My titles have a very "horror" font style, which is affective amongst the audience as it straightaway gives them that horror feel. Also, we put the film title "The Wake" at the end, as it will leave a cliffhanger for the audience wanting to know more about the film or what happens next. Also the title will stay on their minds, as it comes at the very end.
What films have influenced you from the industry and why?
There are many films which influenced our film. The film we have made is a horror film, under the slasher category which is our sub-genre, so we looked at many popular slasher films in the industry. Our main influence was "Halloween". We took a lot of influence from this film, because the storyline, the costumes, props, setting and characters all were great for the audience. It all made up the conventions of a horror/slasher genre film. In our film opening, the killer has a very similar mask, as to the one from Halloween, we took influence here because the mask was very simple but also gave that scary effect to the audience. Another thing from our film opening was our props, we used a knife which is very significant in a slasher film.
Why have you chosen your production company logo?
We have chosen our production company logo, because it shows the audience who produced the film, who was behind the making of everything in the film, also it shows what kind of films we would make. What is the job of a film distributor?
A film distributor is a company which has individual response for the marketing and distributing of the film. A film distributor would have to be trustworthy, as they would be responsible for the release of the film. They could set the release date of a film, so it can be viewed to different audiences.
How would your film be funded?
The way my film could be funded, is to approach another film production company, preferably a well known company, because this could also raise awareness to the audience for my production company and my film. For example, I could approach a company like Hammer Films, because they are a very well known production company in the film industry and produce films mainly in the horror genre.
Titles in a film are very important, because it shows all the different roles of the people who have created the film. Evaluation Question 2
How does your media work represent particular social groups?
In my media film opening, I play the main protagonist of the film who is presented as a young student, an could be from around the age of 16-18, so he would be in the teenage social groups. This social group can vary from students to workers, they could be of any ethnic race or from a multi-cultural society.
Above is a screenshot from my film opening of the main protagonist of the film Tony. You can see that he has a simple blue hood on, with his hair styled up.
In this picture above is an image of an actor in a hollywood movie called "The Amazing Spider-man", you can see that they presented him as young student, who is dressed very casually, similarly to the picture of the character in my film opening, they're both wearing a hood and have styled up hair.
This shows that the social groups they both are in is their both teenagers, and are young students. It shows that the fashion and style amongst this social group is very similar.

Why could you not use copyright music?
Copyright law protects original works, such as websites, books, music, paintings, photos and video. This is why I am not allowed to use them as it does not belong to me, and if I used it, I will be going against the law.
Production Log - Editing
Editing
Are you on schedule?
Yes we are on schedule for the editing. We have enough time to put our clips in order, to crop certain parts and add our music. Also we can add fonts which will match our genre conventions.
How is it going?
The editing has gone well and we've made it look much better than expected, as we've changed hte order of where we first wanted certain clips. The music we've added also makes our film very affective along with the titles and transitions.

What are the difficulties?
The difficulties were that the time for our film opening has to be no more than just over two minutes, this meant we had to crop quite a few shots and shorten them so it can fit in the time allocated.

What programme are you using and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
The programme my partner and I have used is iMovie. This programmes has many advantages, as it is very fast and easy to use. You can do a lot of effective editiing on some of the shots, for example, you can do voice overs, use effective transitions and add more than one song on the timeline.

The disadvantages of iMovie is that the effects are limited, as it does not have as many effect you can use than other programmes like Windows Movie Maker. Also you cant move the titles around the screen, it has to be in one spot, it would've been better if we could move it on a different area of the screen.
Production Log - Filming
Filming:
How did it go?
Our filming went really well, however we had to re-shoot our film. The first time we filmed, we thought it was okay because it matched our planning with the stpryboard, script and the planning. However the acting in the film didn't meet the standards and made the film look less realistic. We reshot the film and changed the location and reduced the actors down to two characters from three, so it could be more understandable for the audience and and match our genre conventions. Our seocnd filming went much better than the first, as it looked much more realistic and much more improved. The acting and the shots we used were more affective.
Did you change anything from your planning?
We changed the whole storyline in our filming from the storyboard because we realised that the storyline wasn't scary enough and didn't really match the conventions of a horror, as it was more funny for the audience rather than scary. So we had to change the storyline, but not completely as we kept the similar kind of narrative.
What were the difficulties?
There were quite a lot of difficulties while we shot our film opening. Firstly, was the lighting for some of our scenes. It was very dark and there wasn't enough light to show the faces of the characters, so we had to wait another day so we can shoot just when it was a bit lighter. Secondly, one of the actors who filmed the first time couldn't attend to reshoot, therefore it affected our storyline which we had to change due to this.
Are you on schedule?
Yes we are on schedule as all the filming is done, however we still needed to editing, by shortening some shots, adding music and titles.

Task 17 - Timeline Planning
This is a timeline of my film opening which is called 'The Wake' i have included all title sequences we are using at the start of the film opening. I have also said on the side what is going to happen in the film in order and i have said which bits we are using either diegetic or non-diegetic. This will help me with the film opening because it gives us a plan of what and how we are going to start our film opening and how we are going to end it.

Task 16 - Costumes
Costume
The killer for my movie, will wear a white mask similar to this picture. The mask will make the murderer completely anonymous, so no one knows who he is. This will resemble his personality as a gruesome and heartless murderer. In my film opening, I will show that this murderer is after a boy, and to get to him he kills his friends and family, so who he is or why he is after him will be unknown to the victim, which is why this mask will be effective, because we don't know who the killer is.
The killer will wear a black, dark hood which he will use to hide himself. He will wear the hood over his mask, so it will be hard to recognize him at night, it would be difficult to see him.
The victim will be wearing casual clothing, and his style will reflect his personality, it may show that he is young and that he represents a young social group who are students, and are everyday teenage boys who enjoy playing football and watching movies on the weekend.

Task 15 - Location
This is the house where I will be shooting my film. It fits in well with the conventions of a horror, as our main character Tony will be in the house by himself, which is a typical convention as it shows the victim is alone.
This is the stairs leading up to the corridor upstairs where we will see X (the killer), who is in the house but Tony is not aware of this.
This is Tony's bedroom, where he will be most of the time getting ready or talking on the phone during the film opening.
I have chose to use a house as my location, as it shows meaning of the film, which is a young teenager who is by himself in the house and the killer iis after him. This fits in to the typical conventions you would expect in a horror.

Task 14 - Prop List
Knife
The villain will have to be dangerous, so he will have a weapon he uses which will reflect his vicious and dangerous personality. Also a a knife will be a threat amongst the victims,so the bigger the knife the more the threat. Here is an image of a kitchen knife, where you can see it is very sharp. Also a knife is a very popular prop for my genre, as my killer is a slasher who kills his victim by stabbing them.
Fake Blood
I will be using fake blood, as this important in a horror film, because it shows the etreme pain and suffering ofthe victim. It will signify and show that the victim has been hurt violently and the blood will resemble his pain and the danger of the knife which my killer will use.

Task 13 - Moodboard
Here is my moodboard. I have used many different pictures, words and quotes from different horror movies to describe my genre. This moodboard will help me have a better understanding of what the audience should expect in a horror film, and the ideas I can come up with for my own film.

Task 8 - Production Logo Company
This is the production company logo that I have come up with, called "Slasher Productions", which I will be sharing with my partner who I am working with for my film opening. I have used bloody effect for the writing, and used a face of a killer. I have used all these effects, so it suits my genre. What this production logo tell the audience about my company and films, is that they are mainly horror or thriller. The man represents a killer or a monster, and the blood and knife represent victims being hurt and attacked.
The job of my production company is to help produce the films and to do all the editing for the film and focus on my genre and make it suitable for my audience. My company would be an "independent" film company, because it is outsied of the "major" film studios. Major film studios are films which are mostly featured in Hollywood, and have big budgets. Major film examples ares like Paranormal Activity, sinsinster and Saw.
Major film companies mainly focus on the budgets and how many views, ratings and sales they could make. Also the major film companies use A-List actors to help promote their film. Below are examples of some major film production companies who mainly produce "horror" films.
Independent companies focus more on their audience and try to use their conventions to the best they can so their audience enjoys the film.

Task 7 - Audience Expectations
- What is the genre of the film you are creating?
The genre of the film I am creating is horror. I am working with my friend Luca and we are creating this film together. I decided to use this genre, because it is very popular amongst audiences and I also enjoy watching horror films. The generic convetions make horror films very exciting which could appeal to me or people similar to me.
- Who do you think the target audience for this genre is and why?
The target audience I think my film is targeted at is for people aged 15 and above. I have decided to choose this audience, because the purpose of horror films is to scare people, and show the different things which make it a horror, for example the violence, the blood and gore. Teenagers aged 15 and abov like enjoy watching horror films and like that "jumpy" feeling which horror films give.
- What Demographic do you feel would watch your film?
The demographic that I feel would watch my film are C1, C2, D and E. The people under these categories are people who have jobs, but they are not proffessional jobs, and these people could possibly have enough days off and could go to their local cinema quite frequently to watch the latest movies.
- What BBFC will your film fit into? What effect will this have on the audience?
The BBFC my film will fit into is for the 15 rated certicifate. Most horrors that are released these days are mostly for teenagers and also the storylines are mostly based on teenagers or students. My film will affect the audience, because a 15 film has a "teen" type of language, because of the slang and the swear words and lifestyle of the characters which the audience would be familiar with. My film will appeal to the audience, because the characters and the style will refelct the teenage life.

Task 6 - Nine Frame Analysis
Se7en is a horror, which stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.
Frame 1: In frame 1 there is an empty book, what this could tell me about the film is, that maybe in the film the book is very important, and maybe the person is about to wirte mportant things in it, for example it could be plots and plans to murder. Also it looks very old and dark, which could suggest that this person is lonely and has a dark villanous side ot him.
Frame 2: In this frame, we can see an image of someone's hands, what this tells me is maybe it is the hands of a victim. There is two rays of light going over the image, which may be coming from a window, this shows that the room is very dark and hasd a quite atmosphere.
Frame 3: In this frame, is an extreme close up shot of someone's fingers, where the skin is being cut with a razor. What this could suggest to the audience, is that this mysterious man, is villanous and dangerous. The shot also suggest that this killer feels no pain or sympathy for himself or others. Also the razor is a very dangerous weapon, which may show us that this character has no fear of dangerous weapons.
Frame 4: This shot shows that the hands picking out a book from a stack of different books. This shot could be significant in the film, because it may show the importance of the books. The books could possibly have clues for the "mystery" or "secret", as the darkness and roughness of the books show they have been kept saf which could hold secrets or plans.
Frame 5: This shot shows the person's hands and that he/she is sticking a photo on the list. This could suggest many things for the film. It could show that this mysterious person is plotting something of a person, or maybe is writing a note of an event. This could be very important for later on in the film, because seeing this book and photo could tell us or reveal a story.
Frame 6: This is a high angle shot looking down at a sketch/drawing of a man's face. This shot is very significant and could suggest that this drawing is of an important character in the film or has a relation or link to the person drawing it. It is also very dark and the light is mainly focused on the image, once again this is done to maybe show the audience the importance of this sketch.
Frame 7: This shot is an extreme close up of the persons hands. I can see thst this persons hands are dirty and rough, with plasters round his fingertips. This extreme close up shot shows the significance of this persons hands, as it could suggest to us this persons character. Also this person is sticking something down in his book, what this tells us, is that maybe this person is recording something or making a book of some kind.
Frame 8: This shot is a follow up of shot 7 and is another close up, where we can see this person is carefully putting his sheets together in a book or note pad form. The director uses this shot to maybe show the importance of this book this person is creating.
Frame 9: This is an extreme close of the person cutting out the word "GOD". This is very important, because it tells us that this person is possibly religious and believes in Go or maybe he is doing a bad sin and wants to make a note of it that he is going against God's will.

Task 5 - Certificate Ratings
Certificate Ratings
For this task I have created a PowerPoint about certificate ratings. In this PowerPoint you will see information about different certificate ratings, what things are acceptable or not acceptable, for example like violence, drugs or nudity. This will help me for my film opening, because it will give me an idea of what certificate I will be using, and what things I'm allowed to use for my opening to make sure it is not too extreme, and is suitable for my audience.

Task 1 - Timeline of A Film Opening
Task 1 : Timeline of A Film Opening
I have chosen to look at the opening of 'Avengers Assemble' (2012) Directed By Joss Whedon
I watched the opening sequence of 'Avengers Assemble' and on a piece of paper recored all the titles that appeared in the 01:53 time, I wrote a total of 25 titles on my timeline. The director Joss Whedon, is mentioned more than twice and this reflects his importance in the film. I also noted that the camera does different shots, which shows the characters' costumes, whihc emphasises their powers and skills, for example, on the title "T18 Mark Ruffalo" it shows a broken pair of glasses, this reflects to his character, because when he transforms into the hulk he breaks and rips out of his clothes. I also wrote the titles of the companies that are behind the film to release it, which shows the reputation of the film.
Here is a sheet, showing all the titles I recorded of the opening sequence on a timeline.
